Comparative Genomics

ENCODE

I am currently involved in the ENCODE consortium, which has sequenced the same region in a large number of vertebrate genomes. The consortium is currently experimentally identifying functional regions in the human genome, with a view to improving an understanding of how sequence leads to function.

The large sequence alignments available from the consortium offer many exciting opportunities for studying comparative genomics and offer a unique opportunity for improving our understanding of how sequences evolve.

Mouse Genome Sequencing Consortium [Nature; Genome Research]

The sequencing of the mouse genome was an important step in comparative genomics, enabling the first large scale comparison between two mammalian genomes.
