Documentation
Ribosomal S2 proteins have been shown to belong to a family that includes
40S ribosomal subunit 40kD proteins, putative laminin-binding proteins,
NAB-1 protein and 29.3Kd protein from Haloarcula marismortui. The laminin-
receptor proteins are thus predicted to be the eukaryotic homologue of the
eubacterial S2 risosomal proteins [1].
 
RIBOSOMALS2 is a 6-element fingerprint that provides a signature for
ribosomal S2 and related proteins. The fingerprint was derived from an
initial alignment of 9 sequences: the motifs were drawn from conserved
regions spanning virtually the full alignment length: motif 1 includes the
region encoded by PROSITE pattern RIBOSOMAL_S2_1 (PS00962), which lies 
towards the N-terminus; and motif 4 includes the region encoded by PROSITE
pattern RIBOSOMAL_S2_2 (PS00963), which lies in the central section. Two
iterations on OWL26.0 were required to reach convergence, at which point a
true set comprising 30 sequences was identified. Seven partial matches
were also found, all of which are ribosomal S2 fragments and/or related 
proteins that fail to make significant matches with one or more motifs.
 
An update on SPTR37_9f identified a true set of 65 sequences, and 10
partial matches.
